Political activist, former member of the Panthers, and mother to the late rap pioneer, Tupac, has passed away at 69. Last night at 9:34 p.m., Marin County deputies responded to Shakur’s home in Sausalito, California, after she suffered a possible cardiac arrest. She was transported to a local hospital where she died just before 10:30 p.m. Officials have not released a cause of death, but have confirmed that the Marin County Sheriff’s Coroner’s Office will be leading an investigation.
Shakur was honored and immortalized in Tupac’s 1995 hit song, “Dear Mama”, in which he detailed his relationship with her, as well as how much he appreciated her and all that she had done for him. Dear Mama was the lead single off of his third studio album, Me Against the World. The song went platinum, and peaked at No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Shakur took over complete control of her son’s estate after he was murdered back in 1996.
