Many fans were alarmed to find out that Post Malone wasn’t featured on XXL’s Freshman cover.

However, XXL Editor-In-Chief Vanessa Satten and Assistant Editor Miranda J. stopped by The Breakfast Club for an exclusive interview where they dished on why Malone was noticeably absent from the cover. According to Satten, Malone’s team informed her that he was steering away from Hip Hop and focusing more on different genres.

Satten stated, “We were told by his camp that he wasn’t paying attention to Hip Hop so much, he was going in more of a Rock, Pop, Country direction. Once we heard that he wasn’t really acknowledging Hip Hop, especially when they were telling us, ‘We’re going in a Country direction,’ that’s a message that you don’t really wanna be in the Hip Hop world so we’re just gonna let it go.”

Malone has since fired back, stating, “My love of music should never be questioned. I shouldn’t be chastised for expressing myself in whichever way I see fit. That being sad, I never have once said that “I’m not going to make hip hop anymore.”

He continued, “I have a hip hop album coming out in August. I made a HIP HOP mixtape promoting my HIP HOP album. Everyone has the right to do whatever they want to f*cking do. I want to continue making hip hop. I want to continue writing songs on my guitar. I want to continue to work with talented artists across any genre, and continue doing the sh*t that I love.”

Malone went on to say that he was invited to be part of the Freshman Class, but declined because he didn’t want to take the six hour flight to New York to shoot the cover. In response, Satten posted a lengthy message on Instagram explaining where she received all of her information about Malone’s newfound musical direction from.
