Kevin Gates will spend the next 180 days behind bars.
Yesterday, a Florida judge and a jury of six women found Kevin Gates guilty of misdemeanor battery after he kicked an 18 year old female fan in the chest during a concert in Lakeland, Florida last year.
Gates argued that he kicked Miranda Dixon out of self-defense after she continued to tug on his shorts and touch him in inappropriate places while he was performing. Unfortunately, the judge had no sympathy for Gates, sentencing him to six months in the slammer.
Originally, prosecutors wanted to give Gates 60 days of anger management therapy, but for an undisclosed reason – the judge decided to go with a six month sentence. Gates’ attorney, Jose Baez, who also served as Casey Anthony’s attorney years back, told the jury that Dixon’s claims weren’t “credible”, and that she was using the case to gain more damages for a future civil trial.
During the trial, Baez stated, “Her credibility is to be questioned and you will not be able to beyond and to the exclusion of every reasonable doubt in this case believe her and that is why you should enter a verdict of not guilty in this case.”
Immediately after being sentenced, Gates was fingerprinted, and taken to Polk County Jail. He will be credited for any time served, fines, and court fees.
