Back in 2012, the music world was devastated when Aaliyah died in a tragic plane crash. Not only did the industry lose an R&B icon, Dame Dash lost his best friend and the love of his life.

Dash isn’t one to show his vulnerable side, but during an episode of VH1’s Family Therapy With Dr. Jenn, the 44-year-old Hip Hop mogul let his guard down and opened up about how death in general has affected him over the years. Dash is featured on the reality show with his two estranged brother, Jeremy and Bobby Dash, to receive therapy and rebuild their tarnished relationship.

While sitting on the couch next to his brothers, Dash revealed that the death of Aaliyah and his mother turned him into an “animal”. Dash told Dr. Jenn, “I lost my girl, a couple years back, Aaliyah in a plane crash. I wasn’t expecting that and also my mother died and at the time my father wasn’t in my life, the only person that took care of me was my mom.

So I was always afraid that she was going to die and then my worst nightmare happened, she died. You know, everything that scared me is losing people I love and everyone that I really love, as it relates to females, I’ve lost. So what it’s made me be is the animal that I am because I don’t want to sit down and think about the things that are hurting me but you know.”

Since his mother’s and Aaliyah’s passing, Dash says it’s extremely hard for him to show compassion and open up to others. Hopefully, Dash can let his brothers in just a little so they can mend their relationship.

Watch the full episode of Family Therapy tonight (April 13) on VH1 at 8/7c.
