Music is universal. It’s used for many constructive reasons, to stand the testament of time, enabling experiences to live on forever through cadences.

Music is also used as an tool of expression, to tell a story, a true story.

The story of Chris Savage is one that consist of many trials and tribulations, without sparing the brazen details of a harsh reality.

“Growing up was a whole street environment, a street atmosphere.” — Chris Savage

Being subjected to the harsh reality of growing up in the streets can make or break you, but Chris uses the lessons learned as a source of inspiration to make change for the betterment of not only himself, but for his community.

It was this conscious effort to be a voice of reason, a catalyst for change, that has enabled Chris to further establish himself in hip-hop.

In this over-the-phone interview we caught up with Chris to talk about new music, inspirations and more.

Q: What inspired the name?

A: First name Chris, the “savage” part just came from the streets just like any other name.

Q:What was it like growing up?

A: Growing up was a whole street environment, a street atmosphere. No silver spoon, lot of different things come with a situation like that.

Q: How did you get started with music?

A: I always listened to music growing up. Once I got out of prison, I decided to make a change and better myself. Got the opportunity to tell my story, from my perspective, and here we are.

Q: What inspires your creativity?

A: Most of my creativity stems from things that I went through, my community, just me and my own personal growth. Things that have changed for me overtime.

Q: What was the transition like going from artist management to being an artist?

A: It was a transition of understanding is the best way I can put that. Some of the issues that artist and management have between each other, definitely would’ve occurred, had I come into the game as an artist at first. I’m more understanding of the process and what works in my approach now.

Q: Talk to me about “Gangsta How It Is”

A: It’s an introduction record. Bo Willie sent the beat over and we thought this was the perfect time to exercise the opportunity of a beginning. This record for me was geared towards this is who I am, this is what we’re about to get into, this is me.

Q: Any upcoming projects that you’re currently working on?

A: “Gangsta How It Is” is actually the introduction to my next mixtape “True Story” that I’m currently working on. Everything is set in stone, except for an actual release date. There’s a beginning, a middle and a present day. Bunch of stories from my past that really help paint the picture of me as an artist.

Q: Any words of advice for upcoming artist?

A: Express who you are and be yourself, simple as that. Don’t want to over-complicate things.

Q: Closing remarks

A: Every 6-weeks, we dropping something new. Be on the lookout for True Story. The Outfit movement is coming. This is a grass-roots situation, we got the city behind us.
