We will forever mourn the loss of Aaliyah, and to this very day it is still hard to think about the factors that played a role in her untimely death. But according to her former boyfriend, and Roc-A-Fella Records co-founder, Dame Dash, Babygirl would still be alive if he was with her on the day of her passing.

On August 25, 2001, Aaliyah and 8 of her crew members boarded her airplane in the Bahamas. The the twin-engine Cessna 402B was 700 pounds overweight, causing it to plummet to the ground shortly after takeoff and explode. An autopsy later revealed that there were traces of cocaine and alcohol in the pilot’s system. Aaliyah was in the Bahamas to shoot her “Rock The Boat” music video. She was only 22 years old.

On Tuesday, Dash stopped by The Real, and explained how he could have prevented the “One In A Million” singer’s death. Dash stated, “Well, there is no chance that if I was there, we would have been on that plane. You know what I’m saying? So, it would have never happened that way.

She told me she was going to the Bahamas and I was against it like, “Yo, don’t go.” And then down to the last, we had the Blackberry, down to the last Blackberry that we had, before she went there, she was like, “Yo, I don’t like that plane.” And I was like, “Don’t get on it.” And she was just like, “You know, I gotta do it.” You know, it was a complicated situation, but she had to go do that video.”

Unfortunately, Dash couldn’t travel with Aaliyah to The Bahamas because he was in New York with his son, and had to attend court.

Dash continued, “So you know if I was there, I would have made sure that that jet that was supposed to be for her, the g4, she would have been on that. I wouldn’t have got on that plane, you know what I’m saying? So it probably would have been different. But you know um, everything happens for a reason.”
