Every since his December 2014 arrest, Bobby Shmurda’s legal team has been doing everything in their power to help the 21 year old Brooklyn rapper become a free man. But with Shmurda facing 69 drug and weapon charges, his case has proven to be quite a challenge. However, Shmurda is ready to step in and help his lawyers build his defense against the case.

A few days ago, Shmurda and his team requested access to personal records and civilian complaint files for the police officers who arrested Shmurda and his GS9 crew. Shmurda has stated that he believes the cops set him up, and that he was a target because he is black and is a rapper. Unfortunately, the judge doesn’t believe Shmurda is a victim of racial profiling, and ultimately ended up denying him access to the records. This could be a major setback for Shmurda, who is facing up to 25 years in prison.

During a hearing on March 15, Shmurda’s lawyer, Alex Spiro, told the judge, “This isn’t just a singular encounter where one police officer is sued by one individual one time and the case is dismissed. This is a rampant pattern that existed in this case and with these officers in other cases.”

Shmurda says that correctional facilities are worse than prisons stating, “They lock us up like we animals all day. This is not prison. Remember, this is jail. Prison is when you’re convicted for something. That’s prison. And prisoners have more freedom than us. They be outside. Prisoners walk around. They got programs. They got schools. They got a bunch of stuff they can get into. They even got college courses up there that prisoners can take.”

Shmurda is expected to go to trial as early as May 11.
