Tracy Chapman Sues Nicki Minaj Over “Sorry” Sample

by Yellah Bone

Tracy Chapman sues Nicki Minaj for sampling her song without permission.

It looks like Nicki Minaj has another lawsuit on hands. According to TMZ, Tracy Chapman is suing Minaj for copyright infringement. Chapman claims that Minaj’s Nas-assisted song “Sorry” comprises half of the lyrics and vocal melody of her 1988 single “Baby Can I Hold You.”

Apparently, Chapman never gave Minaj permission to use the sample, so she was shocked upon hearing the song, which had been leaked and played on radio stations.

Back in June, Minaj’s team reached out to Chapman to see if she would sign off on the song. A few weeks later, Chapman declined – via her business manager. Not too long after that, Nicki’s people reached out one last time, saying that the “Anaconda” rapper was inspired by Chapman and wanted to talk things out with her. Chapman declined again. Ultimately, Sorry wasn’t featured on Queen.

In addition to copyright infringement, Chapman is seeking unspecified damages and wants to prohibit Minaj from further releasing the song.
