N.W.A’s biopic movie “Straight Outta Compton” debuted at number 1 at the box office, earning an impressive $56.1 million its opening weekend. Universal Studios predicted the film would bring in $29 million, but it exceeded estimations. Straight Outta Compton surpassed American Pie 2, making it the biggest ever August debut for an R-rated movie. The film also snatched up a spot as the best opening in history for a music biopic surpassing Notorious (2009), Walk The Line (2005), Ray (2004), Selena (1997), The Soloist (1997) and La Bamba(1987).
Straight Outta Compton chronicled the rise and fall of N.W.A (N*ggaz With Attitudes). The West Coast hip hop group consisted of Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, DJ Yella, MC Ren, and Arabian Prince (who eventually left the group). The gangsta rap group stayed together 5 years before they released their final album “Niggaz4Life” in 1991 and disbanded.
