Sold-Out Dates: Hot97 Summer Jam Blends Music, Culture & Style at MetLife Stadium

by Derrius Edwards

On Sunday, June 2, 2019 thousands of concert-attendees flooded MetLife Stadium in preparation for Hot97 Summer Jam.

Hot97 Summer Jam has continuously served as the pinnacle in entertainment when it comes to prestigious platforms to land a performance slot on, especially considering the nature of who’s involved.

Past acts featured the likes of Pulitzer-Prize winner Kendrick Lamar, the renowned Lil Wayne, Swizz Beatz, A$AP Ferg and other prominent artists within in the industry that have transcended the game in more than one way.

This years lineup encompassed Cardi B, Meek MillMigos and other charting artists I’m sure have made their way into your playlist or local radio station rotation.

But wait, there’s more.

In adding more fuel to the fire, Hot97 exemplified musical grandeur in the upmost fashion in having numerous surprise guest accompany the already star-studded lineup, but I’ll provide more details surrounding who was in attendance later in this piece.

The experience started at the Festival Stage with the two finalists of the Who’s Next Destination Summer Jam contest, New York natives Na Boogz and Mod Da God. Which followed with a captivating performance by Festival Stage artists Trippie Redd, City Girls, Blueface, Nicole Bus, and G4 Boyz, who were sure to provide enough vitality to galvanize fans for the remainder of the show.

Once their sets concluded, fans began to make their way inside of MetLife Stadium for the main event with Kash Doll gracing the stage first. Her commanding performance was followed by Melii’s fan-favorite “HML” serenade, which provided choir rehearsal vibes as virtually the entire stadium sung aloud in alliance with Melii’s harmony.

The H-Town Hottie Megan Thee Stallion shut the stage down with a suggestive display of influence throughout her set that captivated the attention of everyone in attendance, further emphasizing the importance of stage presence. Brooklyn’s own Casanova was up next, performing his fan favorites “Set Trippin” before bringing out Flipp Dinero and Afro B as his surprise guests. Rich The Kid graced the stage accompanied by his newest acquisition, North Carolina-based trio  83 babies, and collectively performed their new record “No Cap“.

Funk Flex had the honors of bringing out Philly-native Meek Mill who tapped uptown’s dapper connoisseur Fabolous for quite a memorable set, which also featured an ode of homage to the late Nipsey Hussle.

Cardi B was welcomed home to the tri-state area with an overwhelming amount of love and thunderous claps that echoed throughout MetLife Stadium as she burst onto the stage on a three-wheeler motorbike. She did a phenomenal job in displaying an electrifying set accompanied by her newest single release “Press“, and of course the night wouldn’t be complete without bringing out City Girls to perform their hit record “Twerk“. However, I can attest to the fact that everyone was caught by surprise once famed Country Music star Billy Ray Cyrus and the rambunctious cowboy Lil Nas X joined Cardi B to perform his triple platinum hit record “Old Town Road” in the midst of her exhilarating set.

Tory Lanez closed out the show in a very braggadocious manner by switching up the weather forecast and sending audience members into a frenzy with a some unprecedented ‘rain’.

A personal favorite of mine would have to be Davido’s set. It’s always intriguing for me to witness inclusiveness in music, especially when it blends culture. Hip-hop serves as one of the most prominent vices today that aids in bridging the gap between cultural understanding and enlightenment regarding reaching a broader depth of audience.

Hot97 did a profound job at continuing to write the narrative for understanding the importance of Hip-hop culture and music.

Can’t wait to see what next year brings!
