Renowned R&B singer Natalie Cole, daughter of the late Nat King Cole, passed away Thursday evening at Cedar Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles. Cole’s publicist Maureen O’Connor revealed that the “Unforgettable” singer had died of congestive heart failure related to ongoing health issues. Cole’s family released a statement saying, “It is with heavy hearts that we bring to you all the news of our Mother and sister’s passing. Natalie fought a fierce, courageous battle, dying how she lived … with dignity, strength and honor. Our beloved Mother and sister will be greatly missed and remain UNFORGETTABLE in our hearts forever.”

Over the years, Cole has suffered from a number of health issues. In February 2008, she revealed she had been diagnosed with hepatitis C stating, “Hepatitis C stayed in my body for 25 years, and it could still happen to…addicts who are fooling around with drugs, especially needles.” Four months into treatment for hepatitis C, Cole was diagnosed with kidney failure and required dialysis. Throughout much of Cole’s life, she battled crack cocaine and heroin addictions which began as recreational use in college.

The Recording Academy also released a statement saying, “We are very saddened to learn of the passing of one of music’s most celebrated and iconic women, Natalie Cole. A nine-time Grammy winner and MusiCares Person of the Year honoree in 1993, Natalie followed her legendary father into the music business with magnificent hits like ‘Inseparable,’ ‘This Will Be’ and ‘Unforgettable,’ achieving multiplatinum, worldwide success in her own right,” said Neil Portnow, president and CEO of organization. “We’ve lost a wonderful, highly cherished artist and our heartfelt condolences go out to Natalie’s family, friends, her many collaborators, as well as to all who have been entertained by her exceptional talent.”

Condolences and blessings to the Cole family…
