Famed R&B and soul singer Percy Sledge, 74, died today at home in Baton Rouge, Louisiana after a long battle with liver cancer. In 2014, he had surgery and continued to tour after. He will always be remembered for his most successful hit When A Man Loves A Woman which was released in 1966. The song made number one on both the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B singles chart.

He released a number of other songs including Take Time To Know Her, Warm and Tender Love, and It Tears Me Up. However, those songs didn’t reach as much success as the classic When A Man Loves A Woman. A dedicated Sledge continued to perform up until a year ago. Steve Green from talent agency Artists International Management Inc stated “He was one of my first acts, he was a terrific person and you don’t find that in this business very often. He was truly a standout.”

In 2005, Sledge was inducted into the Rock Hall.

Sledge is survived by his second wife, and twelve children, two of whom became singers.
