Nicki Minaj opens up about her alleged beef with Cardi B.
For the past few months, fans have been speculating an alleged beef between Cardi B and Nicki Minaj. Cardi B has slammed the allegations a number of times, but we’ve never really heard Nicki’s side of the story.
Minaj recently sat down for an interview with Zane Lowe on Beats 1, where she promoted her two singles “Barbie Tingz” and “Chun-Li.” While there, the “Anaconda” rapper also addressed her and Cardi’s so-called beef following the release of “Motorsport.”
“When I first came in the game, if a female of [my] stature had done a feature with me on it, I would only be singing their praises and saying thank you. […] She’s just gone full steam ahead and congratulations to her.”
“The first interview [Cardi] did after ‘MotorSport’ came out, it just really hurt me, because she looked so aggravated and angry, and the only thing she kept saying was, ‘I didn’t hear that, she changed her verse. I’m like, ‘What?’ I remember when I first did a song with Trina for the first time, that’s why to this day I love Trina.”
Nicki said she was hurt after she reached out to Quavo to back her after everyone began calling her a liar, but he pretty much dusted her off, “I texted Quavo and was like, ‘Can you back me up on this’. I didn’t want people to think I was lying, what do I have to lie about? And he didn’t back me up. He texted me and was like, ‘I would go on Twitter and back you up if you were my girl. LOL.’ And that hurt because he’s somebody, I love him. There are certain rappers who I call my baby. Quavo. Weezy is my baby. Swae Lee is my baby.”
“Quavo told me, ‘I’m not gonna go on Twitter and address that sh*t. If I do an interview, then I’ll address it.’ And I was like, ‘Yikes.’ It hurt my feelings to know that people would watch me be slaughtered and not one person will step in to tell the truth. They’ll run with that lie. They’ll allow people to run with the lie because it’s entertaining to let Nicki seem like a bad guy and it’s sad.”
“Quavo texted me, I still have the text in my phone, first of all, Quavo came to my studio and played ‘Motorsport.’ He was the only person on ‘Motorsport.’ I said, ‘Oh that’s a hit. That’s out of here.’ He wanted me to get on a record called ‘For Keeps.’ I said, ‘No, please, please, let’s do ‘Motorsport.’”
“All the guys wanted to be on ‘Motorsport.’ I was like, ‘Alright.’ I knew that much because they were all working on their group album and he texted me and said is it OK to put Cardi on it. I still have the text on my phone where I said, ‘Yeah, let’s do it.’ And that’s the only story I told. You know, I said exactly how it came about and when it was time to clear the air about that, no one did that.”
Nicki also revealed that she was painted out as the bad guy because she didn’t show up to shoot her scenes for the Motorsport video the same day that Cardi did. According to Nicki, she wasn’t trying to be malicious, “All of them allowed me to look like I lied and even with the scheduling conflict, she’s using my hairdresser now, so even he can attest to the fact that there was a scheduling conflict.”
As the interview came to a close, Minaj stated that Cardi never really showed her any love until recently, “Up until this recent interview that she did, I had never seen her show me genuine love in an interview. I could just imagine how many girls wish they could have been on a song with Nicki Minaj. I’m not saying in it a cocky way, but yikes…it’s because of the Nicki hate parade that she felt comfortable to address me in that manner.”
