Although iLoveMakonnen hasn’t publicly announced it yet, it appears that he is no longer signed to Drake’s OVO Sound label. An unidentified rep for iLoveMakonnen revealed to Inverse.com that the 27 year old “Sellin” singer has cut all ties with OVO Sound.
Many fans have suspected this for awhile now, but the rumor seemed to be confirmed about a month ago. On March 19, Makonnen was noticeably absent during SXSW, when former label mates dvsn, Majid Jordan, PARTYNEXTDOOR, took the stage with Drake for a surprise OVO Sound showcase.
It’s unclear as to what caused the shocking split, especially being that just last month iLoveMakonnen seemed to drop hints at an OVO Sound collab album. However, over the past few months, Makonnen has released a slew of music, and Drake hasn’t shown support or announced any of his new releases via Instagram and Twitter like he does with other OVO artists.
Makonnen rose to fame in 2014, shortly after Drake remixed his breakthrough single “Tuesday”. Shortly after, it was announced Drake had signed Makonnen to his label, which is distributed by Warner Bros. Records. Makonnen may not be part of the OVO team anymore, but that hasn’t slowed him down a bit. Yesterday, he dropped his “Drink More Water 6” album, and recently announced that he will be going on an joint tour with Lil B.
