Dreamville Festival, A Musical Gala Unlike No Other

by Derrius Edwards

Dreamville Festival is the pinnacle of festive entertainment, periodt.

In all of my years of existence, I never would’ve foreseen a more appropriate time to become a J.Cole fan other than now.

Yes, I’m virtually “tardy to the party” as some would say, but after Saturday’s spectacle I’m honored to become a part of the Cole fan-club and I can attest to the fact that it’s not solely because of the mind-riveting composition of metaphors and similes aligned together so eloquently in the form of a verse.

I’ve become a J.Cole fan, better yet, I’ve become a Dreamville fan on the premise of the time, effort and compassion required to facilitate an event such as this.

In lieu of Hurricane Florence, Dreamville Festival was postponed until the following year, allowing residents affected by the natural disaster to recoup and take adequate measures in the rebuild phase of a damage rendered.

As a fellow North Carolinian, I didn’t know what to expect from attending a Dreamville event. Closest thing to an “experience” may have been the pop-up shop I was fortunate enough to attend during NBA All-Star Weekend in Charlotte, NC. Little did I know that was just a mere glimpse into the multifaceted world that makes up Dreamville.

Upon my arrival to the festival grounds at Dorothea Dix Park, I couldn’t help but become engulfed with a euphoric feeling of extreme bliss. Instantly, almost as if a presence of a good-spirited mindset pervaded the air with each step.

40,000 people in a controlled environment sounds like a headache for any millennial or tech savvy personnel that knows how those type of startling numbers impact service towers.

However, that lapse in time where all parties in attendance were virtually disconnected from social media presented the opportunity for full-engagement and attentive dialogue among peers. Some may even say this moment in time was well-needed in allowing society to remember the value that stems from real-time engagement, real conversations.

Aside from the breathtaking display of musical aptitude exemplified from each artists involved, sets that left attendees in nothing short of awe, the performances wasn’t my favorite takeaway from the festival.

You’d expect for me to even say the range of heartfelt, mesmerizing ode’s of homage paid to the late Nipsey Hussle, but with all respect, that wasn’t it either.

My favorite takeaway from The Dreamville Festival was the sense of fulfillment.

Despite the different obstacles that manifested throughout the day transitioning into the evening, not one individual felt like their time was wasted. In essence, it’s almost more like time was invested in developing a higher understanding behind coming together for a unified purpose.

For the love of music.
