DMX is back in the slammer.
It appears that DMX will spend the next year behind bars. On Wednesday, in Manhattan federal court, X was sentenced to one year in prison for tax fraud, followed by three years of supervised release.
Prosecutors requested the maximum sentence of five years, in an effort to teach DMX a lesson. Last year, X pleaded guilty to knowingly participating in a multi-year scheme to conceal $1.7 million dollars from the IRS. Originally, he was facing 40 years in prison for the alleged crime.
DMX’s lawyer, Murray Richman, played DMX’s tracks, “Slippin” and “The Convo” during court to bring light to the hardships that he’s faced in life. Former NBA star, Jayson Williams, who runs a rehab facility called Rebound, noted that DMX is not a bad person and that his addiction influenced him to make the wrong decisions.
“He wasn’t evading taxes on purposes. When you are in a self-destruct mode…you are not worrying about paying taxes. We are dealing with a sick individual. [DMX] can really change the world. He can take the stigma off of sobriety. He is not a bad person, he’s a sick person that needs help.”
