One of the most distinct things about DMX is his loud and raspy voice. Although his fans may have been by his side since day one, Diddy may not have felt the same way. During an interview with hosts N.O.R.E. and DJ EFN on the Drinks Champ podcast, DMX shared a story about his first meeting with Diddy. X and Diddy met at a Yonkers studio in 1997 or 1998, where Diddy told him he was going to sign him to Bad Boy Records.

DMX says he admired Diddy for telling him to his face what he didn’t like about his style stating, “One thing I respect about Puff is he told me too my face what he thought. He said, you’re voice is too rough, you’re not marketable.’ So in my mind, what he’s saying is, ‘work on this.” Basically, Diddy had a change of heart.

But less than three weeks later, Diddy offered X a deal with Bad Boy after learning that he was signing to Def Jam. DMX says Diddy said to him, “Yo, I’ll lace your pockets! I’ll double what they gave you!”. Ultimately, DMX declined the offer and explained that if Diddy couldn’t see his talent from the jump, he couldn’t sign with him.

X’s debut album, It’s Dark and Hell is Hot, went quadruple platinum.

Do you think Diddy made a mistake?
