Timbaland Opens Up About Drug Addiction And Depression
Timbaland reveals he nearly died from an overdose.
Behind closed doors, Timbaland has been battling a demon that many of us were unaware of. In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Timbaland opened up about his depression, and how he abused Oxycontin to deal with it.
Three years ago, Timbaland was so deep into drugs that he overdosed and nearly died, “All I can tell you is that there was a light. I woke up trying to catch my breath, like I was underwater. But through that whole thing I saw life – I saw where I would be if I don’t change, and where I could be if I did…I thought about Michael Jackson. I didn’t want to be old and taking these pills.”
Timbaland began taking Oxycontin in his thirties to help with nerve tissue damage that resulted from a gunshot wound that he suffered as a teen. Not too long after, Timbaland fell into a deep depression due to his declining career, causing him to take more and more of the pills – which eventually led to him getting hooked, “Music is a gift and curse. Once you’re not popping, it plays with your mind. The pills helped block out the noise – I’d just sleep all day.”
When Jay-Z began to notice a change in Timbaland, he offered him a few words of advice, “I remember Jay-Z told me one time, ‘Don’t do no more interviews’ – because I was saying crazy shit.” Timbaland’s current girlfriend, Michelle, was also concerned about his health, and admitted that she didn’t sleep at night because she feared he’d stop breathing.
Timbaland is now on the road to recovery and says he only drinks alcohol and smokes marijuana. He says he felt it was necessary to speak out about his battle to young artists in the Hip Hop community who may be dealing with depression and turn to medication, “These kids come from a place where they don’t have money, don’t have a real home. It affects them, and you hear it in the music.”
