[EXCLUSIVE] Lupe Fiasco Says Kendrick Lamar Is “Not A Top Tier Lyricist”
According to Lupe Fiasco, Kendrick Lamar needs to step his lyrical game up.
Back in 2012, Lupe Fiasco crowned Kendrick Lamar as the “Next Big Thing” at his Lupe Fiasco Outstanding Fan Awards held at the Congress Theater. Lupe told the audience, “Out of the many, there’s only one guy that I am a fan of that I think deserves this award, so the ‘Next Big Thing’ award goes to my big homie Kendrick Lamar.”
Fast forward to 2018, Lupe has a change of heart and says Lamar is “not a top tier lyricist.” After a Twitter user asked the “Kick, Push” rapper if he thought Logic was a better lyricist than Lamar, Lupe responded, “I’ll put it to you like this. K. Dot is not a top tier lyricist to me and my standards when it comes to punchlines and bars. His overall lyrics are good, his stories phenomenal, but punchline entendre lyrically I don’t see it.”
He added, “Also the only issues that the world thinks I have with KDot and I actually do is that i think his Control verse was wack and suer overhyped to be a verse claiming you are the best rapper. It was very weird. I was told it was just bait but still.”
Things began to heat up after a fan suggested that Lamar’s “Look Out For Detox” was better than Lupe’s entire catalog. Lupe quickly responded, “I’ve never been destroyed. Also the only issue that the world thinks I have with K. Dot and I actually do is that I think his ‘Control’ verse was wack and super overhyped to be a verse claiming you are the best rapper. It was very weird. I was told it was just bait, but still.” The tweets have since been deleted.
Top Dawg Entertainment executive, Terrence Henderson, also known as Punch, stepped in and subliminally threw a few shots at Lupe, tweeting, “Lol,. Stop it. Make records baby.” He later wrote, “Aiight. So l almost got a lil upset earlier, then l remembered we are going against Jay Z for Album Of The Year at the Grammys. Lol. What was I thinking?”
A couple of days ago, Lupe accused Lamar of copying his artwork for his upcoming Drogas Wave album for his cover art for his song “All the Stars.” Dave Free, president of TDE, briefly replied to Lupe’s observations, “@LupeFiasco go kick & push yourself into a tree with these wild allegations. 😂.”
