Drake Mourns Death Of Tragically Hip Singer Gord Downie
Gord Downie dies at 53.
On Tuesday, Canadian legend, Gord Downie, 53, passed away after a battle with brain cancer. Downie was the lead singer of one on Canada’s most iconic rock bands, The Tragically Hip.
Following news of his death, many paid tribute to Downie – including Drake, who honored the singer on Instagram. The 6th God posted an old photo of himself meeting Downie for the first time at a Raptor’s game.
The caption of the picture read, “Rest In Peace legend 😓😢 so glad we got to meet and have this conversation. You will be forever treasured by this country and missed by the world 🇨🇦.”
In an official statement, Downie’s family stated, “he knew this was coming” and “his response was to spend this precious time as he always had – making music, making memories and expressing deep gratitude to his family and friends for a life well lived, often sealing it with a kiss… on the lips.”
“Gordie said he had lived many lives. As a musician, he lived ‘the life’ for over 30 years, lucky to do most of it with his high school buddies. At home, he worked just as tirelessly at being a good father, son, brother, husband and friend. No one worked harder on every part of life than Gord. No one.”
Following a seizure in December 2015, Gordie was diagnosed with cancer.
The Tragically Hip has released 14 studio albums, two live albums, one EP, and 54 singles. Nine of their albums have reached No. 1 on the Canadian charts. Three of their albums sold one million copies or more.
