[BREAKING] Activist Erica Garner Dies At 27
Eric Garner’s oldest daughter passes away.
Erica Garner, who became a activist and critic of police brutality following her father’s death, died yesterday at Woodhull Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. After various reports began to surface, her death was confirmed on her official Twitter account, which has been ran by family members and friends since she was hospitalized.
“Erica the world loves you. I love you. I am glad you came into our lives. May you find the peace in the next life that you deserved while you were here. I will always love you my sister. love you. She passed away this morning. The reports are real. We didn’t deserve her. Out of respect to Erica please do not request comment if the journalist is not Black.”
On Christmas Eve, Erica was hospitalized after suffering a massive heart attack that left her in a coma. Her mother, Esaw Snipes-Garner, revealed that Erica suffered her first heart attack shortly after giving birth to a baby boy in August.
Reverend Al Sharpton also confirmed Erica’s death to the New York Post, stating, “She has passed. Her heart was broken when she didn’t get justice. … The [heart] attack just dealt with the pieces that were left.”
In 2016, Erica campaigned for Senator Bernie Sanders during the presidential election, even appearing in one of his campaign ads. Via Twitter, Sanders issued the following statement in a series of tweets, “Erica Garner was an exceptional young woman. She was a loving daughter, sister, mother, friend. Jane and I send our deepest condolences to the entire Garner family and to all those she has impacted.”
“Though Erica didn’t ask to be an activist, she responded to the personal tragedy of seeing her father die while being arrested in New York City by becoming a leading proponent for criminal justice reform and for an end to police brutality.”
“I had the honor of getting to know Erica and I was inspired by the commitment she made working towards a more just world for her children and future generations. She was a fighter for justice and will not be forgotten.”
In 2014, Erica’s father, Eric Garner, died during a police choke-hold. Police were trying to arrest him on suspicion of selling single cigarettes from packs without tax stamps.
